Burnout can feel overwhelming for anyone – but for neurodivergent adults (such as those with ADHD or autism), it often strikes in unique and intense ways. In this post, I explore how neurodiversity intersects with burnout in adults, especially busy mums and working professionals. I’ll discuss why neurodivergent individuals may be more prone to burnout, how to recognise the signs, and what inclusive support and recovery strategies are available. Most importantly, I’ll introduce a free self-assessment tool – the OLBI burnout quiz – as a first step to understanding your burnout level, and outline how you can start your neurodivergent burnout recovery journey with the right help.
Burnout is not just “in your head.” It’s a legitimate state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a syndrome resulting from chronic stress[1]. And while burnout is often linked to workplace stress, it can affect anyone overwhelmed by long-term stressors – from corporate professionals to stay-at-home mums.
Neurodivergent people, who often cope with additional challenges (like sensory overload, executive functioning difficulties, or social pressures), may be especially susceptible. If you’re a neurodivergent adult feeling constantly drained, or a GP, HR manager, or carer supporting someone who is, this guide will help you understand the roots of burnout and how to recover.
